Maybe some more textIn my very first blog post I detailed how I would be using Wordpress. I confidently stated that it would be the best for the longterm and that I had experience using it. I even said that in the longterm I didn’t want to have any regrets. And that’s true, I don’t want any regrets, but I already experienced regret within a few weeks. When I went to set up my website on Wordpress.org I discovered that my school district had blocked Wordpress and Wix. This was frustrating for me since I only use my work issued laptop. I’ve never needed another device. So, I figured that I would be able to reason with my friends in the technology department and get the ban lifted. In the meantime I used my son’s chromebook to set up my domain on Wordpress. His laptop is so slow and dinky that it was a very frustrating experience. I assured myself that this was only temporary.
However, I soon discovered that the technology department was not willing to budge on their decision. Wordpress.com is taboo in my district, but they said that I could use Wordpress.org. So, I went home and used my son’s Chromebook again to set up an account with Bluehost where I could then use Wordpress.org. I redirected my domain away from Wordpress.com and within 24 hours it showed up on my new page at Wordpress.org. This was great because I could access my new webpage on my district issued laptop. That is until my domain redirected and then iBoss blocked it again. I tried to work on the website on my son’s Chromebook as an alternative but found that the learning curve on reorienting myself to Wordpress was going to b be far too time consuming. I had to swallow my pride and bail out of the time consuming quagmire I had created.
"Not only was this a humbling experience, but it was also a perfect opportunity for me to embrace the growth mindset."
When I reached a point of serious frustration because I was almost at a standstill and I had wasted hours on Wordpress, I realized I had a chance to follow Carol Dweck’s advice and shift my thinking by seeing challenge as an opportunity to grow (Dweck, 2006). So I shifted over to Wix. At this point I had accepted my fate that I would have no way to access my website through my district laptop. A fine and powerful machine it may be, but I wouldn’t get to enjoy the Macbook Pro while designing my site. I had to break down and purchase a device for myself, which I haven’t had to do for the past eighteen years. I opted for the Mac Neo. It’s a new “cheaper” option that Mac released recently. I was able to set up my website on Wix in a fraction of the time I had already wasted. After one evening I was up and running.
