As we’ve spent time studying and applying our knowledge about leadership I’ve gained some insight. In our leadership role simulation I took on the role of a transformational leader. It was helpful to think about the dynamics of different leadership styles and how that might affect communication and progress in achieving goals as a group. It’s helpful to understand the other perspective so that you can better communicate.
Leadership Team
As the transformational leader I found myself running up against the authoritative leader. Before we had our meeting I realized that this would be the case, so I spent as much time learning my role as I did trying to understand the perspective of the authoritative leader just so that I could be more persuasive.
Personally, I’m not sure which leadership style I identify with most. I can have elements of collaborative, transformational, and authoritative. As we discussed in our collaborative discussion group, I think a good leader can operate in different leadership styles based on need and circumstance (McCleskey, 2014). It doesn’t mean that they are all of these styles, but that they understand the use and function of each style well enough to apply it when it’s necessary (Hersey & Blanchard, 1969).
